Article: Indie Sri Lankan Tea Vendor Dilmah
Monday, January 11, 2010 at 7:00AM There is a fantastic piece in the New York Times about small indie tea vendor Dilmah from Sri Lanka and their battle against some of the bigger tea giants around the world.
Mr. Fernando has relished his role as the underdog battling the giants of the global tea business. In the last two decades, he has built Dilmah into one of the world’s largest independent tea companies and one of the best-known Sri Lankan brands by selling tea that is critically acclaimed and more expensive than the competition.
I can't remember the last time I had a Sri Lankan tea but I am definitely going to give Dilmah a try soon. Their tea is pretty expensive but you can check it out here if you would like to try some.

Dilmah single estate Ceylon teas are fabulous. They taste like tea. No, really, I'm serious. You know you're really drinking tea when you drink Dilmah. I've written reviews of two of their teas and intend to write the reviews of the other two today. The Lover's Leap is delicate like a Darjeeling, yet full-flavored as a Ceylon tea should be. You will love it.
Dilmah has positioned itself one step ahead in the US tea game. Right now, tea is largely in the medicine cabinet. As people look beyond health benefits and more toward tea as an experience, they will first be attracted to fancy packaging, and then toward true quality. Fernando has bridged the gap between the needs of Sri Lanka, and the future demands of the American consumer. I hope to see him reap even greater success when the tea stars come into alignment.
I completely agree Jason. I'm excited to try out their tea soon.
